Vacuum a rug on both sides, blot spills straight away without rubbing, and check the fibre and care label before any water touches it. In Singapore's humidity the bigger risk is a rug that stays damp, so any wet cleaning has to be followed by thorough drying. Built-up dust, allergens and set-in stains need a steam clean or wet extraction matched to the rug.
Why does humidity change how you clean a rug?
A rug that gets wet in a dry climate dries out on its own. In Singapore the air is already carrying a lot of moisture, so a rug that has been soaked, scrubbed or left with a spill in it can stay damp in the base of the pile for a long time. That dampness is what leads to a musty smell and, left long enough, to mould on the backing or the floor underneath.
So the rule for any rug here is the same whether you clean it yourself or we do: use as little water as the job needs, and make sure it comes back out.
How do you clean a rug at home?
- Vacuum it properly. Go slowly in more than one direction so the brush reaches the base of the pile. For a rug you can lift, flip it and vacuum the back, then the floor it was sitting on.
- Shake or beat small rugs outside. Doormats and small bedside rugs give up a surprising amount of grit this way.
- Blot spills, don't rub them. Press a clean cloth into the spill to soak it up. Rubbing pushes it deeper and spreads it.
- Check the fibre before using water. Read the label. Wool, viscose and other natural or delicate fibres can shrink, bleed colour or lose their texture when wet.
- Test anything new on a hidden corner. Leave it to dry fully before you judge the result.
- Dry it with airflow. A fan and an open window help. Don't put furniture back on a rug until it is dry right through.
What's the difference between a rug and a fitted carpet?
A loose rug can be lifted, turned and dried from both sides. A fitted carpet can't, so everything has to be done in place, and any water that reaches the underlay is harder to get back out. That makes a light touch even more important on wall-to-wall carpet.

When does a rug need more than a vacuum?
Vacuuming handles loose dust and grit. It doesn't lift what has worked down into the pile and bonded there: fine dust, allergens, body oils from bare feet, pet hair and old spills. Signs that a rug needs a proper clean include:
- it looks flat or greyed in the walkways even after vacuuming
- a smell comes back when the room is warm or humid
- spills have left marks that haven't lifted with blotting
- someone in the home is reacting to dust or allergens

Before either, we vacuum and pre-treat the rug to lift embedded dust and pet hair. We match the method to the fibre, and if a mark is unlikely to come out we'll say so before we start rather than charge for work that won't help.
