Pet hair clings to fabric because it works into the weave and is held there by static and the natural oils in your pet's coat. At home, a rubber glove or squeegee pulls up the loose layer and a vacuum with a brush attachment takes the rest of the surface. Hair that is wound deep into a sofa, rug or curtain needs vacuuming and pre-treatment followed by extraction, matched to the fabric.
Why does pet hair stick to fabric so stubbornly?
Two things hold it in place. The first is the weave itself. Short, stiff hairs work their way between the fibres of a fabric sofa or a rug pile, and every time someone sits or walks on it they get pushed further in. The second is static and oil. Pet hair carries a light coating of the oils from your pet's skin, and on a dry day it picks up a static charge that makes it grip synthetic fabrics.
That's why a quick vacuum often leaves a sofa looking better on top while the hair in the seams and along the cushion edges stays put.
What removes pet hair at home?
For the loose layer on top of the fabric, a few simple tools work well:
- A damp rubber glove. Run your hand across the fabric in one direction and the hair rolls up into clumps you can pick off.
- A rubber squeegee or pet-hair brush. Same principle as the glove, and quicker across a large rug.
- A lint roller. Good for cushions and throws, less useful on a whole sofa.
- A vacuum with an upholstery or turbo brush. Work slowly into the seams, under the cushions and along the base, where hair collects.
Check the care label before you use water on anything. Some sofa and curtain fabrics mark or shrink when wet, and a damp glove should only ever be lightly damp.
What doesn't work as well as people hope?
Surface tools only reach the surface. They won't bring up hair that is wound into the base of a rug pile or packed into the seams of a sofa, and they do nothing about the dander, the fine skin flakes pets shed, which is what most people with a pet allergy are reacting to. Dander settles into fabric the same way dust does.
Brushing hard or using a stiff brush on delicate upholstery can also pull or fluff the fibres, which makes the fabric grip hair even more.
Where does pet hair collect in a home?
Wherever your pet sleeps, sits or passes most often. In most Singapore homes that means:
- the sofa, especially the seams, the gap under the seat cushions and the arms
- rugs and carpets, down at the base of the pile
- the lower edge of curtains, where a cat or dog brushes past
- fabric blinds and the bedroom, if your pet sleeps with you

How does a specialist clean remove pet hair?
